NOTE ON MANUKA HONEY
Virtually all raw, pure honey around the world is basically good for your health because pure honeys contain a varying level of the enzymes including Glucose Oxidase. This enzyme, which is introduced into the honey by the bees, can slowly release antiseptic Hydrogen Peroxide effectively killing harmful bacteria without damaging body tissue.
Some of the Manuka Honey has a healing ability and anti bacterial "activity" that is exceptional because it not only contains Hydrogen Peroxide activity in good stable levels but also a"non peroxide" activity additional and stronger than the Hydrogen Peroxide. Hence active Manuka Honey – but only those certified. The higher the UMF or Active Manuka Factor then the stronger the antibacterial and healing potency.
Latest research seems to indicate that this additional non peroxide activity is a substance called MethylGlyoxal which has very powerful germ killing abilities. (up to 200 times stronger than all other honeys around the world). Active Manuka Honey is used for treatment of antibiotic resistant MRSA super bugs, Bed Sores and other external ulcerative conditions, Helicobactor Pylori (stomach ulcer causing bacteria), E Coli, Staphylococcus Aureus ( the most common cause of wound infection) and Streptococcus Pyogenes ( stubborn , often anti biotic resistant bacteria which inflame and cause sore throats). It is very healing externally on the skin for conditions such as burns, wounds, dermatitis, eczema, abscesses etc. whilst being sterile because of its antibacterial properties. It is also known to decrease the duration of bacterial diarrhoea . Studies show that honey assists rehydration of the body during diarrhoea sickness and that bacteria which cause diarrhoea are very sensitive to the antibacterial action of honey. It is an energy food as it helps improve physical endurance. Perhaps its most famous for its use medically with hospital patients, applied externally on the skin to heal ulcerative slow healing wounds.
The most authoritave and credible research experts for Active Manuka honey recommend that Manuka honey with an activity rating of 10 or more be used for medicinal purposes. Below 10 may still achieve good healing results but there is the possibility that the lower levels of activity may not fully clear the infection. This is because honey with a lower level will not allow as much of the antibacterial action to reach infected tissues, thus possibly not having any effect on deeper tissues.
