Tinnitus

Tinnitus treatment

A number of treatments are used to help relieve the symptoms of tinnitus. Treatment will depend on the cause of tinnitus. Tinnitus is the expression used for hearing noises in one or both ears or in the head when there is no obvious source of outside sound present. Although commonly described as a ringing noise, tinnitus is also described as other background noises.

The most appropriate tinnitus treatment will depend on whether there is an underlying reason or trigger factor that caused the tinnitus to appear in the first place. Tinnitus is sometimes a symptom  of another condition. A few examples include:

  • An ear infection,

  • Ear wax, if tinnitus is due to excess or impacted ear wax,

  • Meniere’s disease, if you have been diagnosed with this inner ear disorder that may affect hearing, balance and cause tinnitus,.

    There are no conventional medicines available to treat tinnitus symptoms where an underlying cause is unknown. There are however a number of complementary medicines may help in the relief of tinnitus including:

  • Acupuncture

  • Aromatherapy/Hopi candles can help you to relax.

  • Osteopathy

  • Homeopathy, specific homeopathic products such as Calcarea carbonica or Cimicifuga have been suggested to relieve tinnitus symptoms

  • Herbal medicines such as Ginkgo biloba, Garlic and Plantago  have been shown to have a favourable effect on reducing tinnitus symptoms.

  • Zinc supplements, the B vitamins( specifically Vitamin B12 and B1) and magnesium have been recommended to relieve tinnitus particularly if nerve or noise damage may have ocurred

  • Apple cider vinegar( unflitered or mother liquor) has been recommended
