Antioxidant

Antioxidants

Antioxidants protect the body against free radical damage in the body. Some free radicals arise normally during metabolism. Sometimes the body’s immune systems cells purposefully create them to neutralize viruses and bacteria. However, environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also create free radicals. Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if the free-radical production becomes excessive, damage can occur.

Free radicals are molecular substances with missing electrons, making them reactive and they can damage structures in cells. Most commonly in the body, these free radicals contain oxygen molecules. Antioxidants work as free radical scavengers to reduce the incidence of free radical species. Free radical damage increases with age. Health benefits include the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases. Antioxidants are naturally found in food and are also available as dietary supplements and botanical products. Early research suggested that longevity was related to having sufficient anti-oxidants but this has not been established for human health. Antioxidants are effective when working as a team that includes some that are water soluble and some that are fat soluble. Undoubtedly, anti-oxidants have been demonstrated as beneficial for particular problems. We have a great selection of antioxidant supplements including:- Astaxanthin, Co-enzyme Q10, Green Tea, Lipoic Acid , Pycnogenol  and Vitamin C

Energy inside cells is produced within units called mitochondria, and as a consequence free radicals result. These oxidant by-products can damage DNA, proteins and lipids (fats) unless protected by the antioxidants. Toxic by-products of lipid (cell membrane) peroxidation may be a cause of cancer or chronic fatigue, inhibit enzyme activity and produce mutations in genetic material that make you age faster.

Exposure to free radicals can weaken the macrostructure of cells that line the arteries and veins, making them more susceptible to fissures or rupture. The natural repair processes attract plaque that can develop into hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).  Free radicals may alter the cholestrol lipids (that float in the bloodstream), causing platelets (clotting blood cells) to become "sticky," increasing the risk of blood clots.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that people who consume lots of vegetables (and some fruits) are less likely to develop degenerative diseases. The cells that are most at risk of free radical damage (such as those in the lens of the eye) are naturally high in the antioxidant nutrients found in vegetarian foods. Deficiencies in these nutrients are common as we age increasing the effects of free radical damage. Research has gradually established the benefits of supplementing with antioxidant nutrients. The anti-oxidants are deemed to work together to remove or neutralise water or fat based molecules. Vitamins E and C, minerals selenium and zinc, bioflavonoids, mixed carotenoids and other nutrients are some of the required antioxidants.

INDIVIDUAL ANTIOXIDANTS

Alpha Lipoic acid

Alpha Lipoic acid is invaluable as it is soluble in both fat and water. Every cell of the body contains Alpha Lipoic Acid and needs it for energy production, but the body produces it in miniscule amounts. As an antioxidant, ALA will protect every structure in the skin from free radical damage.

Astaxanthin

Research has established Astaxanthin as a super antioxidant with capabilities much greater than some of the better-known antioxidants, including beta-carotene. Research also shows that Astaxanthin can further benefit the body by fighting inflammation, boosting immune function and possibly lowering the risk of neuro-degenerative disorders. Contrary to other antioxidants, it is believed that astaxanthin does not act as a pro-oxidant. It may provide high resistance to the skin from sunlight. It is a component also of the essential fatty acid, krill oil.

Co-enzyme Q10

Co-Enzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that is structurally similar to vitamin E. It plays a crucial role in the generation of cellular energy, is a significant immunologic stimulant, increases circulation, has anti-ageing effects and is beneficial for the cardiovascular system. High levels of supplements are used for protection of cells during therapeutic treatments and also for muscular strength and stamina particularly for athletes. Further research suggests that Co-enzyme Q10 may also be beneficial for allergies, gastric ulcers, periodontal disease and diabetes. Co-enzyme Q10 has been used in treating congestive heart failure. It is mainly manufactured in the liver and drugs that interfere with liver enzymes can reduce co-enzyme Q10. Levels of Q10 decline with age, stress, illness and its absorption, even from supplementation, declines with poor digestion. Ubiquinol and nanomolecular technology represent the latest innovations in Q10 technology to overcome this issue.
