Urinary system

The human urinary system consists of two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder, two sphincter muscles, and a urethra. These organs, tubes, and muscles filter out excess fluids and waste products from the bloodstream, which are then expelled as urine. The human urinary system removes waste products known as urea from the blood. Proteins found in meat, poultry, and vegetables are broken down in the body into urea, which is then eliminated from the body via the urine.

The human urinary system problem are most commonly associated with:

  • Ageing:  urinary infections ,kidneys may decline and incomplete bladder emptying.

  • Illness and Injury : infections, blockage and swollen prostate in men all increase vulnerability.

  • Toxicity; Pollutants, medications and other substances

  • Malfunction; nutritional deficiencies/imbalance and excess acidity

Bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections and cystitis are common problems of the urinary system, and are often recurring. Antibiotics are frequently prescribed to fight the infection but increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics can complicate the problem. Kidney stones can be very painful. There are alternatives which mediate problems eg D-mannose for common UTI. Prevention of problems includes actions to ensure that there is enough vitamin D for kidney regulation, sufficient water consumption to ensure kidney flushing and small additions of mixed bicarbonates to alkalise urinary flow. Solidago (Golden Rod) is a proven kidney tonic.

Interstitial cystisis is an inflammatory urinary condition. Food intolerance are a strong factor in  this discomfort. MSM can be used to reduce inflammation.

Urinary Health

Mild lower urinary tract infections (UTI)or mild cystitis are common, unpleasant and painful infections that sometimes resolve themselves. Many herbs have diuretic, antibiotic or anti-inflammatory properties and can therefore be beneficial in helping to relieve the symptoms of these infections. The most common form of UTI (ca. 95% ) in females is believed to be caused by the e-coli bacterium and a natural food supplement D-mannose is particularly effective as it inhibits the attachment of bacteria on the walls of the urinary tract and allows them to be flushed out. Cranberry contains a small proportion of the glyconutrient D-mannose.

Another common form of urinary tract problem, is interstitial cystitis and is principally an inflammatory condition where food intolerance may aggravate the pain.

Vitamin D3 supplentation has been shown to reduce the frequency of bacterial infections in the urinary system.
