Prostate Problems

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (also called BPH) is a condition that affects the prostate gland in men. The prostate is a gland found between the bladder and the urethra, and as a man ages, the prostate gland slowly grows bigger and enlarges. Due to the position of the prostate, as it gets bigger it may put increasing pressure on the urethra. This may then cause a variety of problems in the urinary system, most of all causing the flow of urine to be slower and less forceful, with the need to get up more often at night to urinate or the need to empty the bladder often during the day. Chronically low levels of Zinc may promote BPH at an early age and commonly many men experience these problems after the age of 60.

The herb Saw Palmetto has been demonstrated to reduce prostate pressures if taken regularly. Additional Zinc supplementation is often advised. Nettle and rye grass have been used to reduce other nocturnal urinary problems.

Prostatitis is not related to BPH but can also cause urinary discomfort. It can be caused by infection or allergic reactions. The nutrient D-mannose, a glyco-protein, may relieve some infections of the bladder probably in conjunction with other herbal antibacterial (eg  Allicin, a garlic supplement). Quercetin has been used to reduce allergic related prostate inflammation.

Prostate immunity can generally  be improved with supplements of lycopene , pomegranate and Zinc. Pomi-T is a specific product several herbs ( with anti-inflammatory properties and high polyphenol content) used in trials for those with a high PSA marker. A healthy lifestyle including a polyphenol rich diet has been linked to a slower rate of PSA progression among men with indolent prostate cancer.
